Nature in Andalusia

Nature in Andalusia might be not exactly the first thing that pops into mind when you think of holidaying in Andalusia. But did you know that there are, only a few kilometres away from the hustle and bustle of the Costa del Sol, plenty of options for activities in nature? Often the coast is packed with bathing guests and partying youth and the area is dominated by high tower blocks. But if you drive a few miles inland, you will enter a different world. Here you can hear the silence, you can walk or cycle for miles and enjoy any other nature activity.

The easiest way to enjoy nature you’ll find at Finca Las Nuevas. Our holiday homes are located in a farmhouse of more than a hundred years old, in the hills outside the whitewashed mountain village of Álora. Here you will find yourself in an oasis of quietness, overlooking the almond- and olive trees and the mountains of the national park Sierra de las Nieves.

From your private terrace or one of the many other cosy seats in the garden, you can soak up nature with singing birds, the sun and much more. Maybe you want to take a stroll on the paths around the house.

Bird watching in Andalusia

Not only listening to singing birds is fun. The surrounding area of Finca Las Nuevas is a perfect area for bird watchers. We love watching the vultures floating around above the high rocks on the thermic of the wind near the famous King’s path ‘Caminito del Rey’ at El Chorro.

A small drive further, but not less impressive is Fuente de la Piedra. Every year thousands of flamingos come to this lagoon to breed. Mostly they are huddled together in the middle of the lagoon, but there are always some flamingos in one of the other creeks where you can watch them from the observation hut. More information you can read here.

Your terrace at Finca Las Nuevas is also a good spot to watch birds. Previous guests have seen these birds for example; snake eagle, little owl, griffon vulture, Orpheus mockingbird, European red-breasted wheatear, European canary, red-headed shrike.

Walking trails in Andalusia

The ultimate way of experiencing nature is for a lot of people walking/hiking. Thanks to the mild climate, you can make beautiful walks in Andalusia all year round. In Spring (January/February) you can enjoy the pink almond blossom which is scattered around as light-coloured tufts on the hills. Some time later the spring flowers start to bloom.

The summers are warm in Andalusia, but even then you can find some fun walks. For example a walk through a lovely refreshing river. I bet you even get your children to join you for a walk!

In wintertime you probably want to soak up as much sun as you can get, a boardwalk along the beach is ideal or a hike in the mountains. From our holiday homes and in the area of Finca Las Nuevas you will find plenty of walks. Here you can order a free ebook with some beautiful walks.

Cycling in Andalusia

After the introduction of e-bikes, cycling became a lot easier in Andalusia and is besides sporting also a nature experience! In our area, you can cycle for miles in the hilly countryside and on dusty roads.

Álora is located in the Guadalhorce Valley, where it is possible to ride reasonably easygoing without too many climbs and along citrus orchards and whitewashed villages to end at the beach. Read more on our website.
